Located on UC San Diego’s East Campus, the Shiley Eye Institute is the only academic institution in the area with comprehensive programs for the clinical care of patients with eye disorders, cutting edge research on surgical techniques and treatments of eye diseases, education in the field of ophthalmology, and community outreach. Housed in a modernist three-story building by Anshen + Allen, completed in 1991, it houses clinical, office and labs on the first two levels and outpatient surgical facilities on the third floor.

TEF’s transformation of the second floor converts existing labs into clinical spaces – including Procedure Treatment, Clinical, Clinical Administration, Community Ophthalmology, and staff support spaces – designed to enhance the patient experience and support the Institute’s significant growth in patient demand. The project also entails a seismic upgrade, modifications to building systems infrastructure to meet current code, and accessibility and path of travel improvements, including a new elevator on the east side of the building to ease patient circulation. Building envelope repairs and a refresh of the ground floor entry to the existing elevator lobby are also part of the scope. Outside the building, enhancements to landscaping, signage, and wayfinding, are designed to better guide visitors around the site as the campus experiences major development.
